Initial Inspection and Preparation 

Before the drywall is installed, the contractor will inspect the framing, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems to ensure everything behind the walls is working properly and up to code. During this stage, measurements are taken, material is ordered, protection for furniture and flooring may be laid down, and the work areas are prepared for installation. 

Drywall Delivery 

Drywall sheets, corner beads, joint compound, screws, and other materials are delivered to the job site. Depending on the size of the project, the materials might be staged in multiple rooms for easier installation. 

Drywall Hanging 

The drywall panels are cut and fastened to walls and ceilings using drywall screws. This phase includes: 

• Measuring and cutting around doors, windows, outlets, and fixtures 
• Installing corner bead on outside corners 
• Securing panels to the framing 

Most residential projects can be hung within 1-3 days, depending on the size and complexity of the project. 

Taping and Finishing 

After the drywall is installed, joints and fasteners are covered with tape and joint compound. This process usually requires a tape coat, second coat, and a finish coat. Each coat has to dry before the next one is applied, making this one of the longest phases of the project. 

Sanding 

Once the joint compound is completely dry, the surfaces are sanded completely smooth. Here is where a homeowner should expect some dust, temporary restrictions on access to work areas, and noise from the sanding tools and vacuums. Professional contractors will minimize the dust to improve indoor air quality and reduce cleanup.

Final Inspection and Touch-Ups 

All surfaces should be inspected for smooth joints, a consistent texture, proper corner alignment, and visible imperfections. This is where any minor touch-ups may be completed before the project is considered ready for primer and paint. 

Clean Up 

All leftover materials and waste should be properly discarded from the project site. The work areas should be vacuumed and dusted, leaving the project ready for the next phase.
